1. Shuffle & Bang / Island Bop
One of the most complete projects today. Korey Kingston is one of the best contemporary Ska drummers, reflecting the California sound, without neglecting the important roots of Jamaica and Jazz. The notable influence of bands like Jump with Joey and Yeska, leave an exquisite sound on the album, where Clifford Brown himself would be happy to hear ‘Daahound’ in the Jamaican style.
All Ska lovers surely expected to hear a full LP of this project since ‘Grand Central’ appeared on Angel City Records’ compilation ‘Birth Of The Fourth Wave of Ska’.
Korey’s drum beat is one of the most gratifying sounds today for its strength and spontaneity, hearing him play live with the Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra has been one of the best moments of my life.
I have talked with Korey and I know the passion and dedication he gave to this album, so it deserves to be one of the best of 2020.
2. Cosmic Shuffling / Magic Rocket Ship
We can say that this album is one of the most elegant releases of 2020. The sound and interpretation of the band hold pure nuances, that for a moment we forget that the project comes from Switzerland, to go back to the Jamaican feeling.
If you are looking for a current band that preserved the musical spirit of Jamaica, we could definitely recommend Cosmic Shuffling. And on none of the Magic Rocket Ship tracks, will you come out disappointed in the performance and feeling that comes from the melodies.
3. Boomtown United / Tuffer Than I
An album with a sound undoubtedly influenced by 2 Tone, which is marked at the end of the album with Dawning Of A New Era, by The Specials. His powerful guitar strumming reminds us of the essence of Ska Revival in the style of The Loafers. Although it is an album that, although it can make you frantic on a dance floor, it also has its space for Reggae, very well executed.
4. Jah Jazz Orchestra / Introducing
One of the surprises of 2020 was this album that brings together enough elements to emerge as one of the best of that chaotic year. Arrangements and musical quality is what we can find in the 12 tracks.
Within the world of Ska, we have people who love the sound of the double bass, improvisation and the jazzy sound combined with Ska and Jamaican Reggae.
That the album was recorded in two days does not surprise me given the musical reference of Yves Marcotte and the entourage of musicians who accompany him, belonging to the Swiss jazz circuit.
Dizzy Gillespie’s BeBop is present when listening to ‘Manteska’, which sometimes makes me feel that Arturo Sandoval himself is present with the band.
I think ‘Introducing’ could be the beginning of a project that takes Ska standards back to other levels like Gary Crosby’s Jazz Jamaica.
5. The Oldians / Roots ’n’ Soul
Listening to an album by The Oldians always becomes an aural experience. Javier García is a fundamental pillar of Ska in Spain and one of the best guitarists on the scene.
It was 10 months of pre-production work. And two more months to mix and see the completion of ‘Roots n Soul’ the seventh album by these people from Barcelona, giving us one more delivery of fine music.
In a talk with Javier García himself, he told me that although this album preserves the atmosphere of the Oldians sound, there was an evolution and growth as musicians. And one of those reflections has been the format of making shorter songs.
This album is consolidated as another of the favorites of 2020, I write this while listening to the spectacular voice of Leire Etxarri in ’Talking About’.

Uno de los proyectos más completos actualmente. Korey Kingston es uno de los mejores bateristas de Ska contemporáneo, que refleja el sonido de California, sin dejar aun lado las raíces importantes de Jamaica y el Jazz. La influencia notable de bandas cómo Jump with Joey y Yeska, dejan en el disco un sonido exquisito, donde el mismo Clifford Brown estaría contento de escuchar ‘Daahound’ al estilo Jamaicano.
Todos los amantes del Ska seguramente esperábamos escuchar un LP completo de este proyecto desde que ‘Grand Central’ apareció en la compilación de Angel City Records ‘Birth Of The Fourth Wave of Ska’.
El golpe de batería de Korey es uno de los sonidos más gratificantes de la actualidad por su fuerza y espontaneidad, escucharlo tocar en vivo con la Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra ha sido uno de los mejores momentos de mi vida.
He platicado con Korey y conozco la pasión y dedicación que le entregó a este disco, por eso merece ser uno de los mejores del 2020.

Podemos decir que este disco es uno de los lanzamientos mas elegantes del 2020. El sonido e interpretación de la banda sostienen matices puros, que por un momento nos olvidamos que él proyecto proviene de Suiza, para remontarnos al sentimiento Jamaiquino.
Si buscas una banda actual que conservé el espíritu musical de Jamaica, podríamos recomendar sin duda, a Cosmic Shuffling. Y en ninguno de los tracks del Magic Rocket Ship, saldaras decepcionado de la ejecución y sentimiento que provienen de las melodías.

Un disco con sonido influenciado indudablemente del 2 Tone, que queda marcado en el cierre del disco con Dawning Of A New Era, de The Specials. Su rasgueo de guitarra potente que nos hace recordar la esencia del Ska Revival al estilo de The Loafers. Aunque es un disco que si bien puede ponerte frenético en una pista de baile, también tiene su espacio para el Reggae, muy bien ejecutado.

Una de las sorpresas del 2020, fue este disco que reúne los elementos suficientes para perfilarse como uno de los mejores de ese año caótico. Arreglos y calidad musical es lo que podemos encontrar en los 12 tracks.
Dentro del mundo del Ska, habemos personas que amamos el sonido del contrabajo, la imporvisación y el sonido jazzístico combinado con el Ska y el Reggae Jamaicano.
Que el disco se haya grabado en dos días no me sorprende dada la referencia musical de Yves Marcotte y el séquito de músicos que lo acompañan, pertenecientes al circuito de jazz Suizo.
El BeBop de Dizzy Gillespie está presente al escuchar ‘Manteska’, que en ocasiones me hace sentir que el mismo Arturo Sandoval esta presente con la banda.
Creo que ‘Introducing’ puede ser el inicio de una proyecto que vuelva a llevar los estándares del Ska a otros niveles como los Jazz Jamaica de Gary Crosby.
5. The Oldians / Roots ’n’ Soul
Escuchar un disco de The Oldians se convierte siempre en una experiencia auditiva. Javier García es un pilar fundamental del Ska en España y uno de los mejores guitarristas de la escena.
Fueron 10 meses de trabajo de preporducción. Y dos meses más para mezclar y poder ver completado ‘Roots n Soul’ el séptimo disco de estos barceloneses, que nos dan una entrega más de música fina.
En una platica con el mismo Javier García, me dijo que aunque este disco conserva la atmósfera del sonido Oldians, sí hubo una evolución y crecimiento como músicos. Y uno de esos reflejos, ha sido el formato de hacer temas más cortos.
Este disco se consolida como otro de los favoritos del 2020, esto lo escribo mientras escucho la espectacular voz de Leire Etxarri en ’Talking About’.
